چکیده

Lymphocyte transformation studies of nonadherent lymphocytes from chronic Chagasic and uninfected persons demonstrated that responses of all individuals to a mouse heart homogenate showed a correlation with responses to streptococcal antigens. Considering the known cross-reactions between streptococcal and cardiac antigens and the high reactivity of Chagasic patients to streptococcal antigens, it is possible that positive lymphocyte transformation to unfractionated heart antigen preparations may not represent specific reactivity to heart antigens.

T Lymphocytes from Chagasic Patients Are Activated but Lack Proliferative Capacity and Down-Regulate CD28 and CD3ζ

BACKGROUND Chronic persistent infections have been associated with T lymphocytes functional impairment. The aim of this study was to compare the activation status, the proliferative potential and the expression of CD28 and CD3ζ chain on T lymphocytes between chronic chagasic patients and uninfected controls. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Forty-two chronic chagasic patients, 28 healthy indivi...

Human chronic chagasic cardiopathy: participation of parasite antigens, subsets of lymphocytes, cytokines and microvascular abnormalities.

This article tries to demonstrate by new pathological findings (with the use of immunohistochemical technique and confocal laser microscopy) that chronic chagasic cardiomyopathy is a result of multiple factors involving myocarditis, immunodepression, severe fibrosis and microvessels dilatation and that all of these alterations are probably directly related with the presence of Trypanosoma cruzi...

Increased CD4+/CD8+ Double-Positive T Cells in Chronic Chagasic Patients

BACKGROUND CD4+/CD8+ double positive (DP) T cells have been described in healthy individuals as well as in patients with autoimmune and chronic infectious diseases. In chronic viral infections, this cell subset has effector memory phenotype and displays antigen specificity. No previous studies of double positive T cells in parasite infections have been carried out. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDI...

Delayed hypersensitivity to heart antigens in Chagas' disease as measured by in vitro lymphocyte stimulation.

Reactivity to Trypanosoma cruzi antigens and autoreactivity to heart antigens were evaluated in 27 patients with Chagasic cardiomyopathy (group I), 52 patients without evidence of cardiac dysfunction (group II), and 36 selected controls, either healthy patients or patients with other heart diseases (group III). The in vitro lymphoblastogenesis response to T. cruzi antigens was found to be high ...

Chagas' disease and the autoimmunity hypothesis.

The notion that the pathology of Chagas' disease has an autoimmune component was initially based on the finding of circulating antibodies binding heart tissue antigens in patients and mice chronically infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. Later, T lymphocytes reactive with heart or nerve tissue antigens were found in chagasic mice and patients, extending the concept to include cell-mediated immunity...
